The earth was blessed with the birth of LauraLeggett Linney on February 5, 1964 in Manhattan, New York, to parents Miriam Anderson “Ann” Perse (née Leggett) and Romulus Zachariah Linney IV, who had no idea they had created a superstar. Her mother worked as a nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Linney had a love of theater from her playwright and novelist father, but died of lung cancer at his home in Germantown, New York, in 2011, aged 80.

Laura’s parents divorced when she was just 6 months old and her mother would come and raise her in a small one-bedroom apartment. From her father’s second marriage, Laura has a half-sister, Susan.

Laura attended Northfield Mount Hermon School, an elite New England preparatory school. She graduated in 1982, after which she went to Northwestern University to study acting. However, Laura earned her theater degree from Brown University where she transferred. At Brown, she performed one of the plays written by her father. A graduate of Brown in 1986, Laura enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York where she completed her graduate program in 1990. Barely graduated, Laura Linney began to play professionally. She was an understudy for the role of Tess in the New York production of Six Degrees of Separation. She later performed the role in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions.

Laura Linney has been married twice in her lifetime. Her first marriage was to actor and playwright David Adkins. They were married for 5 years, between 1995 and 2000. They met at the performing arts conservatory, Juilliard School, where Linney received an honorary doctorate in 2009 when she gave a keynote address at the school. The couple separated in 1998 before the divorce was finalized in 2000. However, the public only became aware of their separation in 2001. They had no children together. The same year his divorce was finalized, David began a relationship with actress Corinna May.

Linney and her husband waited five years to welcome their first child, a son they named Bennett Armistead Schauer on January 8, 2014.
