Flex Wheeler is a guy who pushed his body almost to the brink of explosion. The bodybuilding masterpiece his body has become is simply the stuff of dreams. Driven by incredible determination and consistency, Flex literally flexed the muscles in his body to the max.

Kenneth Flex Wheeler is a famous American IFBB professional bodybuilder, born on the 23rd of August 1965. Flex was born and raised in a small town called Fresno California. Born into excruciating poverty, Flex struggled with dyslexia, sexual abuse, and suicidal tendencies, but found much-deserved solace in sports.

His high school dyslexia issues meant education and academics are always going to be a struggle. However, Wheeler discovered bodybuilding during his teenage years and began practicing martial arts and bodybuilding.

In his personal notes, Wheeler considers himself a martial artist first before bodybuilding. Wheeler is known for his remarkable flexibility. He has the ability to do full splits, earning him the nickname Sultan of Symmetry.

After high school, Flex briefly spent time in the police, he had a short career as a police officer before refocusing and pursuing his dream of becoming a professional bodybuilder. Although he has been competing since 1983, it wasn’t until he won first place at the California National Championship, Mr. California, that people began to realize his impressive talent.

His career could have been over before it actually began when he was involved in a horrific car accident in 1994 that nearly left him paralyzed for the rest of his life. Wheeler’s life took a turn for the worse when, in 1999, he was discovered to have a rare kidney condition called focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

For athletes, consistency is probably the most underestimated attribute required for sustained success, with his growing health problems, maintaining the high level of fitness required has become nearly impossible, Flex has fallen into depression and his slow journey towards the end elite bodybuilding had begun.

After his diagnosis, a debate ensued in the media about the course of his kidney problems, there were insinuations that his use of steroids was catching up with him. Wheeler insisted her condition was hereditary. Due to chronic health issues, Flex Wheeler had to announce his retirement from professional and competitive bodybuilding in 2000, but he continued to compete until his final retirement in 2003.

His retirement in 2003 wasn’t the last time the professional bodybuilding community would hear the Flex. He wasn’t just another athlete, he was one of the greatest bodybuilders the sport has ever seen. Beyond that, his obsession with fitness was staggering.

In 2017, Flex came back to the only title that had eluded him – Mr. Olympia, he unfortunately finished 15th place. A serial winner, Flex realized there was no point in fighting when his body was slowing down.

He quit professional bodybuilding and decided to focus on his martial arts career, with an emphasis on taekwondo, kempo and aikido.
